Denmark: children contribute to photobook about their lives

The Danish CSO 100% for the children wants to change the stereotypical narrative of children in a marginalized situation. It produced a photo book, POSITION, to portray children in Ghana in different and unexpected ways. The book serves as teaching material for social science students and associate professors at Copenhagen University College. It can be viewed online via  https://100pct.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/position_web.pdf

Ambitions and values
The children in the book live on the streets, in the market, at a bus station, at a landfill and in simple sheds in Accra, the capital. They are poor, many of them have only the most basic or no schooling at all, the majority have lost at least one parent or have been evicted from home. But all 15 children see themselves as capable people with resources, skills, ambitions and strong values.

Children’s choices
The book was created in collaboration with the children. They choose where they would like to be photographed, they discussed their challenges and opportunities, and how they relate to the Global Goals. Almost all are migrants. They traveled from villages or neighboring Togo to the capital of Ghana to find work, earn money and finance their schooling. The children’s migration stories can be found on the last pages of the book.
